‘Lonesome Dove’ Adaptation in the Works at Teton Ridge

The Western-focused production company has landed both the film and TV rights to Larry McMurtry’s series of books.

February 18, 2025 – As the Western genre continues its renaissance thanks to Yellowstone and its Taylor Sheridan-backed spinoffs, one of the classics of the literary genre is being put into development.

Teton Ridge has acquired the rights to adapt Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove and the subsequent books in the Pulitzer Prize-winning series. The deal, which was made with McMurty’s estate, covers film, TV, and all rights except publishing, which remain with Simon and Schuster. It’s unclear if the new adaptation will be a film or for television.

McMurtry’s epic follows retired Texas Rangers who go on a cattle drive from Texas to Montana, during which time they encounter many dangers. Streets of Laredo, Dead Man’s Walk and Comanche Moon followed Lonesome Dove, and were also adapted for TV, with Comanche Moon airing in 2008.

Thomas Tull and Jillian Share from Teton Ridge Entertainment will produce the Lonesome Dove adaptation, along with Jon Jashni, McMurtry’s grandson Curtis McMurtry and McMurtry’s writing partner Diana Ossana.

Lonesome Dove was previously adapted into a critically acclaimed miniseries in 1989 and starred Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Diane Lane and Danny Glover, among others. It earned multiple awards, including several Emmys and Golden Globes wins.

Teton Ridge Entertainment is the film and TV banner under Teton Ridge, the Western-focused company whose holdings include The Cowboy Chanel and The American Rodeo. Recently, Teton Ridge picked up the rights to Louis L’Amour’s novel Fallon with Crazy Rich Asians writer Peter Chiarelli set to develop the screenplay.

Said Tull, “Lonesome Dove is an epic work that perfectly embodies the enduring spirit of the American West. We are immensely grateful to the McMurtry family for partnering with Teton Ridge Entertainment to bring its timeless themes to new generations of viewers.”

Added Share: “We are dedicated to bringing to life diverse stories within the Western genre with authenticity and soul, and are honored that the McMurtry family has entrusted us with what we see as one of the most important properties in entertainment history.”

The McMurtry Estate is represented by Craig Barker and Sally Helppie; Teton Ridge Entertainment by Vincent Chieffo and Steven Peña; and Ossana by Robert Thorne, UTA and Anonymous Content.
